DCSF, Freedom of Information

The Brief

The Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOIA) gives the public the right of access to information held by public authorities and requires public authorities to make this information available. The intention of the Act is to increase visibility into the work of public bodies, to ensure that policy-making processes are fair, democratic and open.

The Project

The DCSF Freedom of Information (FOI) website allows members of the public to submit FOI requests to the department and provides a mechanism for the public to search previous requests and to browse the department's FOI scheme. An RSS feed is available for users who wish to keep up-to-date with important published disclosures.

The website and CMS were created within six weeks of the initial consultation. A design was originated that presents the information within a clear and concise structure and keeps within the department's design guidelines. The CMS offers three levels of administrative access with in-depth help for each. It also validates as an accessible website in its own right.
